ETF Tapping (Emotional Freedom Technique)

This is a wonderful method, as it is very easy to learn, yet quick and effective.

EFT Tapping is a powerful and easy-to-learn tool for emotional healing and stress reduction, that I regularly teach to my clients. It works by tapping on specific acupressure points on the body while focusing on a specific issue or emotion. By combining the ancient wisdom of acupuncture with modern psychology, EFT helps to release emotional blocks, reduce stress, and reprogram limiting beliefs—resulting in a profound sense of freedom and emotional well-being.

EFT Tapping: Understanding What It Is and How It Works

EFT Tapping, often referred to as “tapping,” is a technique that involves tapping on certain acupressure points on the body while mentally focusing on an issue or emotion you want to address. These tapping points are located on the face, upper body, and hands, and correspond to meridian points used in acupuncture to help release energy blockages.

During an EFT session, you identify a specific issue or emotional charge—such as anxiety, fear, sadness, or physical pain—and as you tap on these meridian points, you speak affirmations or statements that acknowledge the issue at hand. This process helps to calm the nervous system, release emotional and physical tension, and shift the energy around the problem.

Developed by Gary Craig in the 1990s, EFT draws from both the psychological and energetic systems of the body. Since its inception, it has grown in popularity and has been used to help individuals with a wide range of emotional and physical challenges.

What can It help with?

EFT Tapping is incredibly versatile and can be used to address a wide variety of emotional, psychological, and even physical issues. It’s particularly effective for:

  • Anxiety and Stress: By tapping on specific points while focusing on anxious thoughts or stressful situations, you can quickly reduce your body’s fight-or-flight response and create a sense of calm.
  • Trauma and PTSD: EFT helps release the emotional charge stored in the body from past traumatic events, offering relief from emotional triggers and flashbacks.
  • Phobias and Fears: Tapping can help desensitise your body’s emotional response to phobias or irrational fears, allowing you to feel safer and more empowered in situations that once triggered anxiety.
  • Depression and Negative Emotions: EFT addresses the emotional patterns that fuel depression, helping to shift negative thinking and release heavy emotions that may be holding you back.
  • Physical Pain and Discomfort: Many people have found relief from chronic pain, tension, and physical discomfort by using EFT to release the emotional blockages that can manifest physically.
  • Self-esteem and Limiting Beliefs: Tapping can help shift negative self-talk and self-sabotaging beliefs, creating a healthier, more positive sense of self-worth.
  • Addictions and Cravings: EFT is a tool used to help break the emotional ties to addictive behaviours, including food cravings, smoking, or other habits that may stem from emotional wounds.

EFT can be used as a standalone technique or in combination with other therapeutic modalities, and it’s an excellent tool for ongoing self-care. Whether you’re dealing with a specific issue or just want to reduce general stress, tapping offers a simple and effective solution.

Why Is It So Popular?

EFT Tapping has grown significantly in popularity, and for good reason. People are increasingly drawn to this approach because of its simplicity, effectiveness, and accessibility. Here are a few reasons why EFT is so widely embraced:

  • Quick and Easy: Unlike many traditional forms of therapy that may take years to show results, EFT Tapping often produces rapid shifts in emotional state. People can experience a significant reduction in anxiety or emotional pain after just a few minutes of tapping.
  • Accessible to All: You don’t need a therapist to benefit from EFT. While working with an experienced practitioner can be very helpful, the technique is easy to learn and can be practised by anyone, anywhere. With EFT, you can tap on your own and start feeling relief almost immediately, making it a great self-help tool.
  • Non-invasive: EFT is a gentle, non-invasive approach that doesn’t require drugs or intensive physical interventions. The focus on tapping and affirmations allows individuals to process their emotions in a way that is gentle and empowering.
  • Holistic: EFT addresses both the emotional and physical aspects of pain and trauma, making it a holistic healing tool. By tapping into the body’s energy system, it helps create balance in both the mind and body.
  • Root Cause Healing: One of the reasons EFT has become so popular is that it doesn’t just treat the symptoms of an issue; it works to address the root cause of emotional and physical problems. By clearing the emotional charge from a trauma, fear, or negative belief, EFT promotes lasting change and transformation.
  • Backed by Research: Over the years, there has been growing scientific support for the effectiveness of EFT. Research studies have shown that EFT can significantly reduce stress hormones like cortisol and improve psychological well-being. This research continues to help validate its popularity and effectiveness in various therapeutic settings.

The accessibility, quick results, and broad range of issues EFT can address make it a favourite tool of mine to use in sessions and to teach clients for their own use. It’s a simple yet powerful technique that empowers people to take control of their emotional health and healing in a way that feels safe, immediate, and impactful.
