IFS (Internal Family Sysyems)

Internal Family Systems (IFS) is a powerful therapeutic approach that helps us understand and heal the different parts of ourselves. Developed by Richard Schwartz, IFS views the mind as made up of distinct “parts” or sub-personalities, each with its own thoughts, emotions, and behaviours. These parts can often feel in conflict, especially if they have been wounded or silenced. By learning to communicate and work with these parts, we can restore harmony within ourselves, heal old wounds, and move toward a more integrated and peaceful state of being.

I have had such great feedback when I bring this approach into sessions, as clients can really relate to the idea of different parts of themselves.

IFS (Internal Family Systems): Understanding What It Is and How It Works

IFS is based on the idea that we all have various “parts” within us that influence our thoughts, behaviours, and emotions. These parts can be seen as inner voices or different aspects of our personality, each holding specific roles—such as the “inner critic,” the “protective part,” or the “wounded inner child.” IFS also recognizes that at the core of every person is a compassionate, wise, and whole “Self,” which is capable of guiding and healing these parts.

In an IFS framework, no part is considered bad or wrong; each part developed in response to life experiences and is doing its best to protect us or fulfil a need. However, when parts become stuck in their roles—especially if they’ve been shaped by past trauma—they can become out of balance, leading to internal conflict, emotional pain, and unhealthy patterns of behaviour.

The goal of IFS therapy is to help you connect with your true Self, the compassionate leader within, and guide your parts toward healing and integration. Through the process of “unburdening” these parts of their painful memories or extreme beliefs, you can bring them back into balance and create more harmony within yourself.

Why Is It So Effective In Helping Clients Heal?

IFS is incredibly effective in helping my clients heal for several reasons:

  • It works with all parts of you: Traditional therapeutic approaches often focus on just the conscious mind or surface-level thoughts and behaviours. IFS, however, recognises the many different parts of the psyche and seeks to understand the motivations behind each one. By addressing the full spectrum of your inner world, IFS helps you heal on a deeper, more comprehensive level.
  • It empowers your Self: At the heart of IFS is the concept of the “Self”—a wise, compassionate core that is always present but may be overshadowed by the parts. The Self is calm, grounded, and able to lead with empathy and wisdom. IFS helps you reconnect with this inner leader, which in turn enables you to transform your relationship with your parts. This empowerment fosters confidence, self-compassion, and emotional resilience.
  • It heals past wounds: Many of our parts are formed in response to trauma or painful life experiences. These wounded parts hold onto past pain and continue to react in ways that may no longer serve us. Through IFS, we can help these parts release their burdens and heal the wounds they’ve been carrying, allowing us to break free from old emotional patterns and stories.
  • It encourages self-compassion: One of the cornerstones of IFS is the practice of treating each part with understanding and compassion, rather than judgement. This creates a safe and nurturing space for clients to explore and heal the difficult emotions and behaviours that have developed as a result of past experiences. Through this compassionate lens, clients can begin to integrate and accept all parts of themselves, fostering greater self-acceptance and emotional wholeness.
  • It promotes lasting change: Because IFS focuses on healing the parts of ourselves that hold trauma or pain, it leads to lasting, deep-rooted transformation. Rather than just addressing surface-level symptoms, IFS helps rewire the way we relate to ourselves and the world, creating more sustainable emotional health and well-being.

By engaging with your internal system through IFS, you’re able to address not just symptoms but the underlying causes of emotional distress, behaviour patterns, and unresolved trauma. It’s an incredibly healing process that empowers you to find balance, peace, and clarity within yourself.
